PropertyOfZack had a chance to talk with John Nolan (Taking Back Sunday, Straylight Run) the other week about his solo work for a great interview. John and I discussed the release of his EP on vinyl, writing since rejoining Taking Back Sunday, a split with Mansions, and more. You can order Nolan’s vinyl release of Songs I Wrote here. Read up and enjoy!

Songs I Wrote and Songs I Didn’t Write were released over a year ago in May of 2010. Has the reception to them been good from Straylight and Taking Back Sunday fans, even though I guess much of the focus over the past year has been on Taking Back Sunday?
As far as I can tell, the reception has been good. It’s hard to tell now since everything is on the Internet. It seems good though. Everyone seems to like it.

All this time later, Songs I Wrote is finally being released on vinyl via Collective Confusion Records. Why’d you go with Mike for the release?
He approached me about it. It sounded like he could get it done in a good way. I was a little skeptical and worried because I had another experience trying to release my first solo album on vinyl and it went really badly. I was a little bit worried at first about not having it come out the way I hoped. After I talked to him for a while and heard his plan, I felt confident in him doing it.

I believe the vinyl just came in. How does it look?
It looks great. I came home from tour and the box was right there and I got to see it for the first time. It looks great.

Is it hard to believe at all that Heights was released in 2009 and even that the solo EPs were released in 2010?
It is a little bit. It doesn’t seem like that long ago. It’s a little hard to believe that it’s been close to two years since the first solo album came out. It’s pretty weird.

Your main priority is obviously Taking Back Sunday, but do you always plan on continuing your solo work in whatever form you can?
That’s the plan. I’m going to mess around with stuff when I’m home and kind of just always be writing and getting ideas down. I’m going to keep doing that for the time being. When there’s a significant break from Taking Back Sunday stuff, I’ll probably start developing those ideas further and maybe making another recording.

Have you written many new songs since Songs I Wrote?
No, not really. So much of the time after that was getting heavily into the writing for the Taking Back Sunday album. That was the focus for months. More recently, I’ve been trying to get different ideas down. Just bits and pieces. Some of it may be used for Taking Back Sunday stuff, and some of it will probably be my own stuff. I never really know. I always have a collection of ideas.

Singer/songwriter John Nolan began his musical career as the lead guitarist for Taking Back Sunday, helping to secure the band’s place in the alternative rock spotlight before moving on to form Straylight Run in 2003. Guided by John’s pensive, piano-driven songwriting and open, introspective lyrics, Straylight Run released its self-titled debut in 2004 on Victory Records, following up with critically-acclaimed releases Prepare to Be Wrong EP (2005), The Needles The Space (2007) and Un Mas Dos EP (2008). Straylight Run has toured alongside bands such as Motion City Soundtrack, Minus the Bear and Rooney, and their new EP, About Time, is set for release in 2009.

Between recent Straylight Run tours of the U.S. and Australia, John began directing his musical ideas and stockpiled personal recordings toward an emerging solo project. Recorded over a six-month period at his home in Lawrence, Kansas, John’s solo songs reveal a strong dedication to the songwriting craft, showcasing the same musical instincts that led to the success of Taking Back Sunday and Straylight Run. The intricate arrangements and engaging melodies perfectly complement John’s contemplative lyrics, which cut through subjects as diverse as new beginnings (Here I Am), loss of faith (I Won’t Ever Be There) and Midwestern malaise (Screaming Into The Wind).

After assembling the basic tracks, John began working with producer Mike Sapone (Taking Back Sunday, Straylight Run, Brand New) to get a fresh perspective. Sapone’s production expands the songs’ vocal intimacy and harnesses their rhythmic impact to produce a dynamic, hard-hitting sound, and the songs even inspired Sapone to contribute some of his own drum tracks. The solo debut, titled Height, will be released in early fall.

In the meantime, John is looking forward to touring in support of his solo project and experimenting with creative ways of interpreting his songs for the live setting. His wife, Camille, who accompanies him on guitar and piano, joins John on stage. He also plans to incorporate his fellow touring musicians and even audience members into a constantly evolving live show. Whatever shape the live performances take on, John Nolan’s solo project promises to be an exciting one, as he steps out of his traditional front man role and into the exciting possibilities of life as a solo artist.
