We get to work with a lot of great bands and individuals within the music scene here at PropertyOfZack, but it is with great pleasure that we will be posting our first Contributor Blog with Kevin Lyman, founder of Warped Tour, today. Kevin needs no introduction to the world as he has put on one of the most successul festivals throughout the past seventeen years in this industry that has spurred on countless bands from just getting by to making a career out of their passion and love for music. Kevin is obviously an extremely busy person, so we will definitely try to grab a few minutes of his time once a year, but he understandably will not be able to contribute as much as some of our other great guests.
In the blog that you’ll read below, Kevin briefly discusses five different topics that matter within the confines of this music world and his views on them. Click “Read More” to check out the full post, and enjoy it!
“Selling out”: Possibly having your music heard by others? “Others” start the minute your friends are willing to listen to you and not run out of the garage. So, the minute it is not you and your friends just playing for each other the “sell out” has started. Get over it and get on… people are lying if they don’t want more people to hear their music.
Record Labels: It all depends on where you are at in your career. To think you are going to sign to a label, get an advance; while never having to work again is ancient history. Bands that will make it in the future will build a story and a solid foundation. If that story makes sense, independent labels are the way to go. Personally, I don’t see a major label working for 99.5 percent of the bands out there.
