The Company We Keep is a new band that features Brian Southall, Justin Pierre, Branden Morgan, and Amy Brennan, and fans have been stoked to find out more. PropertyOfZack had the chance to chat with Brian Southall not too long ago to discuss the band’s formation, writing with Justin, a debut 7”, LP plans, and much more. Read up and find out what to expect!

For the record, could you state your name and role in The Company We Keep?
My name is Brian Southall and I play guitar and am the primary songwriter for The Company We Keep.

You’ve had your fair amount of projects over the years, but you’ve been quiet as of late with tour managing. When did you want to jump back in with a new project?
I had been using this band name since right before TREOS broke up. I wanted it to be a thing, but nothing came of it. I realized I could maybe do it again about a year ago after being on tour with Motion City. Justin liked all the songs, and we started writing songs together because I’m incapable of writing a melody or a hook. Once Justin began putting things on top of the songs it felt like it was finally worthwhile to try to make it a full time thing as soon as possible. It took a little while, but we’re getting it going.

We frequently see bands or  artists start new bands, and it sort of takes a while to take shape. That often frustrates fans because the project can go through so many phases. You kept this quiet until recently, so was it nice to mold the project outside of the public eye?
Definitely. I’m glad we didn’t try to hurry and release anything. These few songs we’ve recorded are very different from what Justin and I thought it would originally be. We had even tried to start making what we thought we would be a record ourselves, and it just didn’t work out. I’m glad we didn’t push harder on that. We have the same songs, but they’re much better.

Can you talk about the other band members?
Branden, the drummer, plays in the band Misery Signals. He’s been a friend for a number of years now. I always just thought he was one of the best drummers I knew. This band still has a lot of electronic programming elements, and I wanted to get a drummer that could play pretty beats and things like that. He can play it without it all being drum machines and beats. It’s funny for him because this is a cakewalk for him compared to what he plays. He’ll probably get bored every once and a while, but he’s having fun doing it. Amy, the singer, I just happened to meet her. We haven’t known each other for a year yet. We were at a mutual fan’s birthday party. We spoke at a party and she had some songs posted on her Facebook and I checked them out. Justin and I were looking for singers, but we couldn’t find anyone that was right. I asked her to do it and she didn’t seem to interested and we were getting down to the wire before we headed into the studio and she gave it a shot. She’s really happy that she did now. It’s all coming together now.

Fans have wanted to see a project from you for a while now. Justin being in it has added a little steam to it as well. Is it interesting to work with Justin and Branden in different environments?
This is the first time Justin and I have worked on music together, and it’s the same with Branden. We had demos for how we wanted it to go, and it still took a lot more shape once we got in a room together. Instead of me just programming stuff on a laptop, it’s nice to be in a room with a real drummer. It’s a different formula for songwriting and it’s nice. Amy was also great because I didn’t know her at all. She doesn’t know what our comfort zones are, so she had a different take on things and it added a lot.
