PropertyOfZack had a chance to talk with John Nolan (Taking Back Sunday, Straylight Run) the other week about his solo work for a great interview. John and I discussed the release of his EP on vinyl, writing since rejoining Taking Back Sunday, a split with Mansions, and more. You can order Nolan’s vinyl release of Songs I Wrote here. Read up and enjoy!

Songs I Wrote and Songs I Didn’t Write were released over a year ago in May of 2010. Has the reception to them been good from Straylight and Taking Back Sunday fans, even though I guess much of the focus over the past year has been on Taking Back Sunday?
As far as I can tell, the reception has been good. It’s hard to tell now since everything is on the Internet. It seems good though. Everyone seems to like it.

All this time later, Songs I Wrote is finally being released on vinyl via Collective Confusion Records. Why’d you go with Mike for the release?
He approached me about it. It sounded like he could get it done in a good way. I was a little skeptical and worried because I had another experience trying to release my first solo album on vinyl and it went really badly. I was a little bit worried at first about not having it come out the way I hoped. After I talked to him for a while and heard his plan, I felt confident in him doing it.

I believe the vinyl just came in. How does it look?
It looks great. I came home from tour and the box was right there and I got to see it for the first time. It looks great.

Is it hard to believe at all that Heights was released in 2009 and even that the solo EPs were released in 2010?
It is a little bit. It doesn’t seem like that long ago. It’s a little hard to believe that it’s been close to two years since the first solo album came out. It’s pretty weird.

Your main priority is obviously Taking Back Sunday, but do you always plan on continuing your solo work in whatever form you can?
That’s the plan. I’m going to mess around with stuff when I’m home and kind of just always be writing and getting ideas down. I’m going to keep doing that for the time being. When there’s a significant break from Taking Back Sunday stuff, I’ll probably start developing those ideas further and maybe making another recording.

Have you written many new songs since Songs I Wrote?
No, not really. So much of the time after that was getting heavily into the writing for the Taking Back Sunday album. That was the focus for months. More recently, I’ve been trying to get different ideas down. Just bits and pieces. Some of it may be used for Taking Back Sunday stuff, and some of it will probably be my own stuff. I never really know. I always have a collection of ideas.

We kicked off our new PropertyOfZack Playlist feature last week with the Major/Minor and Clash Battle Guilt Pride Tours, and the reaction was great. Today we’re stoked to be bringing you our third edition of the feature with Bad Rabbits, The Maine, Taking Back Sunday, and a Playlist from yours truly as well. We’ll be coming at you with more diverse Staff Playlists in the very near future, but I thought it would be great to make a Playlist of my favorite Taking Back Sunday, The Maine, and Bad Rabbits songs to help promote their tour! Taking Back Sunday has been a personal favorite of mine for years, but my personal favorite on this Playlist is “Your Own Disaster.” The Maine’s “Inside Of You” was one of my favorite tracks of 2010, but I of course added some of the catchiest songs on Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop as well. And while I’m new to Bad Rabbits, I think I picked two songs that are a great introduction to the band. Enjoy!
