I attach a certain nostalgia to Comeback Kid; the Winnipeg natives were one of the first bands I discovered upon delving into the world of hardcore, and without them, it’s hard to say if I would have become nearly as smitten with the genre. The Canadian quintet’s latest effort, Die Knowing, represents mine (and others) hardcore nostalgia to a T, blending grating guitars with pounding rhythms and the punchiest of choruses, all of which seem to pay homage to the hardcore punk of the past.
One of the most notable features of Comeback Kid is their distinct and rich guitar tones, and Die Knowing is no exception, with the duo of Jeremy Heibert and Stu Ross serving up song after song of juicy riffs. Unlike current hardcore trends that suggest the lower and heavier the guitar tone, the better, Comeback Kid infuse a level of originality into theirs, opting for a more metallic crunch, while still making Die Knowing a lesson in brutality.
Songs like album opener/title track “Die Knowing” and “Losing Sleep” create a sense of hardcore machismo without relying on the lowest tunings possible, rather garnering their visceral nature from the inherently rhythmic nature of their riffs. These riffs, like a jigsaw puzzle, slide effortlessly into the berating, mid-tempo drumbeats pounded out by Kyle Profeta. The result of this synergy is the type of grooving hardcore that truly makes one’s head bob, a skill that Comeback Kid have been demonstrating for over a decade.
