POZ Review: Chiodos - Devil

There is nothing more challenging to me than writing a review for an album by a band I once loved more than most things in life.
Chiodos was everything to me in late 2005.
All’s Well That Ends Well came out in July of that year and was preceded by several solid EPs. I had never listened to any post-hardcore music before, but thanks to my boyfriend at the time, I was listening to a lot of it. Their music was blaring through my headphones, out of my bedroom, and scaring my family via my voicemail message. My first ever post on YouTube was from a Chiodos show at The Door in Dallas in February 2006.
What attracted me to Chiodos was the combination of power, energy, and melody. Craig Owens had the ability to scream and howl like a madman, and immediately turn around and croon in an incomparable falsetto
Their next album didn’t come out until September of 2007, and by then I had started college and was exclusively listening to Set Your Goals and The Wonder Years. The release of Bone Palace Ballet was but a sad, eventually Owens-less whisper in the wind to me, and I never picked up another Chiodos album again.
Enter 2012: Owens returns. 16-year-old me is still alive deep down, and I am secretly thrilled. The band announced the recording of Devil, and my wait began.
My wait is now over and I am neither over, nor underwhelmed. Devil is actually a good album, and that is coming from some one who hates pretty much any post-hardcore/ hardcore band that isn’t Refused. I had no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
