Mondays mean BandsOnBands, and we’re excited to be posting the PropertyOfZack feature today with Joey Vannuchi of From Indian Lakes.  The band released a great new album called Able Bodies towards the end of 2012, and we’re stoked to have the band on the site today before they head out on tour with Lydia this spring.

In this week’s feature, Joey discusses his love for The Steve Miller Band, who have had a heavy influence on how Joey writes music and how he sees it as well. Listen to songs by Steve Miller here and check out what Joey had to say about one of his biggest influences below!

From Joey Vannuchi of From Indian Lakes:

Growing up in the mountains for most of my life, i mostly was exposed to classic rock and country music. I think a lot of it stuck, but none more than The Steve Miller Band. They might still be my favorite band of all time.

The way i write is heavily influenced by Steve Miller in the way that I also want to write any song that comes to me, no matter the genre. He would write a five or six minute rock jam with guitar solos and huge intro and outro included, and the next song would be a shorter pop song or a sweet folk inspired ditty. All of the songs would be great and i could never choose a favorite. Thats the sort of music i try to create. I want people to hear our songs and not care that it’s not RocknRoll or it’s not pop or blues or anything in between. I like that classic bands like this didn’t do an entire record of the same songs.

To list a few examples, think of songs like the stoner pop jam “The Joker”, the synth driven slow jam “Wild Mountain Honey”, or the borderline country “Dance, Dance, Dance”. “Rock’n’ me” has one of the best rock intros ever written in my opinion, and “Take the Money and Run” is an awesome example of his ability to blend a bit of funk in the mix. “Swingtown” is my personal favorite song from the band. It has inspired me to always work harder and harder to find that perfect song to open a record. It also has some ridiculously sweet drumming throughout the track and somehow manages to make the synth solo something to be taken seriously.

The Maine, From Indian Lakes, and Tallhart are three great bands busy with fall tours, and we decided to put all three together for a new PropertyOfZack Playlist to support their individual tours. Check out the Playlists below while listening to the songs on Spotify and reading everyone’s thoughts!

Our Playlist for our fall co-headlining tour with The Postelles and Mayday Parade! - Garrett Nickelsen

Songs I was really into with this year. For the listeners’ convenience, all of these songs are on Spotify.
Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle
This track caught me so off guard. I was a little late to the club when i heard this record but since my friend, Sean O’ ssulivan, told me about this band i have had a difficult time listening to anything else all year.
Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues
I was so in love with their previous record, and had a lot of issues with the newest one, but I will go back and listen to it just to hear this song a few times. Some acoustic songs can get you more pumped than any heavy rock ones.
Sun Hotel - Talks
Two tours back at a show a Fan told me to listen to this band. I was surprised at how well they blend a lo-fi sound with a dark heavy tone. While I do have to be in a very specific mood to listen to them, when I’m in that mood this songs really cuts me deep.
Desert Noises – Tell Me You Love Me
We have played with these guys a lot and are very close friends, but they are one of my favorite bands to listen to and watch play as well. This song is as good as any of the greatest classic sounding southern/country love songs in my opinion.
Circa Survive – The Lottery
I thinks its obvious to everyone that i have a deep Circa Survive influence that lingers in my writing, but I really haven’t gotten as into anything the same way since ‘Juturna’ in highschool. When i heard this song i was surprised by my serious taking to it. I think its one of the best they have written on any record.
Blitzen Trapper – Might Find It Cheap
This band. I listen to them almost every week. All of their albums are so good. This song is such a great example of their ability to write awesome rock melodies and play their instruments as good as any of the classic rock greats.
Bon Iver – Minnesota, WI
I was really surprised this never came out as a big single off of the record. It was the only song that made me listen to it a few times when i heard it the first time.
Yeasayer - Henrietta
I was so excited to see that were releasing a new record. I loved ‘All Hour Cymbals’ so much, but wasnt crazy about the next few releases. When this single came out i loved it. In my opinion its this perfect blend of electric pop with a big mainstream appeal, but the second half of the song shows you that they can still do whatever they want. Its really beautiful.
My Morning Jacket – The Day is Coming
This Albums been out for a while, but this whole year i kept going back to this song while we were on the road. Its just such a solid jam and the band really has a way of leaving you with a positive feeling without any cheesy-ness.
The Avett Brothers – Live and Die
Probably still my favorite band with their latest release. I just can never stop listening to all of their albums, and this new one is just as good as the rest in my opinion. This song is such a good country pop song. The song is a little cheesy but in a way only this band can get away with in my opinion. - Joey V

Nine Inch Nails – With Teeth

With Teeth makes its second appearance in our POZ lists. Just a phenomenal record.
Elbow – Build A Rocket Boys!
Build A Rocket Boys! by Elbow is like an education in dynamics. Dense and strong, through and through.
Wilco – Sky Blue Sky
Sky Blue Sky ebbs and flows so nicely. From experimental to funk to folk to rock and roll. Beautiful from beginning to end.
Foo Fighters – The Colour and The Shape
The Colour and Shape by Foo Fighters is just so fantastic. So iconic. Just good ole rock and roll.
Ryan Adams – Easy Tiger
Easy Tiger is a record that people we knew just overlooked or thought didn’t stack up to the rest of the Ryan Adams catalogue but we disagree. This record has so many stand out tracks and we listen to it at least once a tour.

From Joey Vannucchi:

The Second half of the tour was a really great time. Our friends in PK are awesome tour-mates. Fun to watch and as friendly as can be. We will definitely play with them again in the future.

Vegas is one of our most supportive and wonderful places to play. We played the same night as the Taking Back Sunday tour came through, playing their entire first album front to back, and we couldn’t believe how awesome kids were being about choosing to see us instead. We heard the TBS show show sold out anyways so i felt better about the kids that said they sold their tickets to come see us. It was a rowdy show and the singing crowd was a wonderful thing to play to. The venue wouldn’t allow time for an encore, so i told everyone id meet them outside and take requests with my acoustic guitar. I really enjoyed chatting with everyone and singing with them in a different setting. I don’t always want to just rock n roll all of the time.

After that we played along the west coast to a few wonderful crowds in San Luis Obispo( Tour mates “PK”s hometown show to a huge crowd), Bakersfield, and San Francisco. The SF show was a 21 and up event, so we posted everywhere that we would be in a park near the venue to play an acoustic set before the show. It was such a nice cold day and a great group of fans showed up. PK showed up and did a couple songs as well. They are a really solid group of performers, able to adapt and sound great in any setting. Make sure and check them out. Some fans who run a bakery brought us some cookies that were delicious! Its always great to mix things up on a tour and connect with fans in different ways. We never want to appear as though we are rockstars to anyone who cares about us and our music, and this acoustic show was one way to make sure we didn’t leave anyone out.

From Indian Lakes are out on tour, and the band is checking in with fans via PropertyOfZack with a new Road Blog feature. Check out their first update below!

From Joey Vannucchi:

The last couple weeks have been so busy for us. With the new record coming out soon and the pre-orders beginning we have barely had time to prepare for this tour. We all got together in a basement in the mountains where the band is from to jam the songs before the first date of tour, and it was nice to get back to just hanging out and being in the outdoors for a bit. It was exciting to play through some of the new material with the knowledge that it would soon be released in a few weeks and everyone could hear what we have been working on for such a long time. We have plenty of old ones prepared as well.

We played a sold out show in Fresno the first night to a really great crowd. We played our first show ever at that venue, so it was nice to know that our nearest fan base was still growing and could be so supportive after a couple years of the same records songs being played to them.

The next night we played in Canoga Park, CA at a guitar shop with a very nice venue in the back. I was so surprised at the response from this crowd. They knew the words to every song from both bands and were probably the best singers in a crowd i have heard. They also clapped in perfect time, which is something you don’t often expect from an audience.

Last night we played at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA. One of our favorite places to play on the West Coast. Definitely one of our oldest relationships and a venue that has done a lot for us much like they’ve done for other bands before us.
