POZ Special: The Industry With Jesse Cannon

by Zack Zarrillo - Jul 8, 2012

image

Jesse Cannon, the man behind Cannon Found Soundation Recording Studios (Man Overboard, The Menzingers, Transit, Lifetime) and Musformation, is back for a brand new Industry feature in our ongoing series. In this week’s feature, Jesse tackles Spotify Artist Apps, MOG being bought by Beats, Android streaming, UK charts, Louis CK’s big move, and much more. Check it all out below!

Spotify has added Artist Apps where some of your favorite has-beens curate playlists of their favorite music. Ever wonder what Rancid are listening to while taking pills for their weak knees? You surely want to know what Quincey Jones listens to while getting his diaper changed. What do Disturbed listen to in between making date-rape-rock? If you want something a little more fresh, perhaps you can listen to a mix from Tiesto while he indulges in the hour long procedure of spiking and frosting his guido hairdo. THANKS SPOTIFY!

MOG streaming service MOG was bought this week by Beats by Dre. The sad news is after getting $35 million in funding they were bought for a measly $14 million which many people believe to be a sad commentary on the value of music streaming services and their value. Funny how this works since everyone who buys Beats are paying way too much money for a product with very little value.

Android just updated their OS and it turns out this update did some serious work to their music streaming service. With a new low latency streaming it has now taken Android up to the standards of iOS (aside from crashing and horrible Apps that don’t play well together) audio Apps will now play audio back with the ease that Apple has spoiled us all with. Now if only Google could tell us what sweet candy crack they were smoking with Google Music and Google +.

The UK charts have always been way more democratic than ours, just look at how music fans can get Rage Against the Machine to be #1 on Christmas just to spite Simon Cowell. In big DIY news a fan funded (via Pledgemusic NOT Kickstarter) musician named Ginger Wildheart (SRSLY) charted higher than Rihanna and Coldplay this week. This gives hope to all of us looking forward to the days DIY artists can do better than major label funded artists. It also gives hope to everyone with a name as ridiculous as Ginger Wildheart who wants to be famous.
