More than two months ago PropertyOfZack, Lame-O Records, and Big Footprints began piecing together The BIG Comp. When we were finally finished we looked at our 75-band charity compilation and thought “how the hell did we do that?” Every band and label we contacted, not only supplied us with songs, but let us know how excited they were to be a part of something so unique. We knew that every band who submitted a song had their own story.

For our second Behind The BIG Comp segment we spoke with Florida’s You Blew It! With a funky name, and even funkier tunings, You Blew It! have established themselves as a front runner in the resurgence of 90’s emo. The Topshelf Records heavyweights have been receiving quite some attention since releasing their LP “Grow Up, Dude,” and they have no plans on stopping anytime soon.  With a full US with Mixtapes and Light Years planned this summer, YBI will have the opportunity to play in places they have never have before-and with nothing but positive reactions coming from fans, we believe that this tour will not only create new opportunities for the band but also open up the eyes of any people who might be sleeping on You Blew It! just because of their funky name.

Hey guys! Thanks for talking to us; before we go on can we get a list of everyone in YBI and their role in the band?
I am Tanner and I sing and play guitar. Andy plays guitar and tells the sound guy that his mic is too loud. Nick plays bass guitar, and Tim plays drums. Trevor plays guitar while we’re at home sometimes but I don’t know if you wanted to know about that or not.

You guys have a really interesting name, how did you come up with “You Blew It!”? Did you have any other names in mind when you first started?
We’ve gotten this same Tumblr question like a million times. It’s nudged in between someone asking what tunings we play in and some anon telling us that he just farted or something. We have this answer rehearsed. Kind of like when someone asks you why you’re a vegetarian or why you have that one tattoo. It’s just a dumb pop culture reference/inside joke that just stuck. It’s a boring story.

On the subject of names, your track and album titles are always very unique – Is there any specific way you guys go about naming your material? Also, is “I’m A Kid, That’s My Job” an Uncle Buck reference? ……I hope it is.
Admittedly we’re the worst at naming things. I mean, you’ve heard the name of our first LP, right? It has “dude” at the end of it. Honestly we just make awful working titles, and by the time they release, the names stick. Also yes, “I’m a Kid” is an Uncle Buck reference. We thought about naming the first song on that split “Why Do You Ask So Many Questions?” but “Batavia, NY” was more fun.

You guys recently released a split with, the always wonderful, Fake Problems; how did you guys first hook up? What was it like working with Derek Perry again?
Perpetually wonderful! Fake Problems lives in the town that I grew up in. We went to a lot of the same shows together when I was in high school, and it wasn’t long after YBI formed that our paths just naturally crossed. I mean it when I say that we wouldn’t even be close to the place we are without Fake Problems or Derek Perry. Grow Up, Dude is basically just a Derek Perry & the You Blew Its record. We owe him big time.

With 3 pressings of “Grow Up, Dude” now sold out, you guys must be overwhelmed with how the record has been received by fans- what has been your reaction to this incredibly positive response?
We’ve been absolutely floored by the reaction, to be honest. We were always confident in the record we had, but none of us ever expected how well it would be received. It just felt like one day we were playing new songs, and then the next, people were singing them while standing on top of other people. I’ve never been so happy to chip my teeth.

Have you guys started writing any new material? Any releases we can look forward to this year from YBI?
Yes. We are writing. I’m going to keep quiet about that for right now though. ;)

You Blew It! went out on tour this winter, and now it’s over. And their PropertyOfZack Road Blog is about to be over as well, so check out the last update below!

From Tanner Jones:

New York, NY
I’m going to be real with you guys. We’ve almost never had a great time in New York. The shows have yielded some pretty cool bands (LvngRm/every band at Friendship Fest for example), but driving through that pile of concrete and curse words makes me want to never sing that Jay-Z/Alicia Keys song ever again. Luckily this time was different. We pulled into Brooklyn with virtually no traffic, got the coolest pizza, and played to a sizeable, responsive crowd. Creator of the Instagram-famous “dear friend and punk celebrity” caption, Christopher Farren came out with his punk rock entourage, Dave Garwacke and Jeff Rosenstock. Too punk to live. Too punk to die. Although despite it all, I’m a little bit bitter. Last year some guy whined on Tumblr that we were playing “scumbag New Paltz” instead of Brooklyn, and HE DIDN’T EVEN COME OUT TO THIS SHOW. I looked you up in my message inbox dude, I know who you are. I’m looking at you. Intensely.

Richmond, VA
Every year, punk rock has a birthday party. Well, this year it came early, and this year it had a name. Alex Wilhelm. Punk rock in its current definition (friendly, drunk, and covering Blink 182 hits), turned 23 tonight, and boy was it freaky deeky. Something like 10 bands in one increasingly wet, increasingly smelly, increasingly sweaty basement. I don’t really have much else to say, but if you want I can keep coming up with ways to change Alex Wilhelm’s name to “Punk Rock.” No? Oh. Continue tumbling then.

Atlanta, GA
Last out of state show of tour! Thus, last show on tour! Wow! First time back at Wonderroot since the last time we were at Wonderroot, and last time was weird. We played an awful hardcore show with awful hardcore bands that stood outside for our set, and then piled back in for some other hardcore band. This time was better though. It was basically exclusively an emo guy show. That’s good for us. Emo guys like us. We like emo guys (GIRLS TOO). A band called Antpile played. A band called Big Awesome also played. Both those bands are really freaking great.
I sang my part in River Rats tonight while holding half of a broomstick. I don’t know why. I just did. Andy told me to do it. I didn’t pretend that it was a guitar. I think if my mistake were to teach anyone a lesson, it’s that sometimes you do or don’t do things in life and you end up really regretting it.
Anyways, last time we were in Atlanta, this guy told us to play Scottie Spliffen. For those uninformed, Scottie Spliffen is a song written by our dear friends and punk rock celebrities (© Christopher Farren), Dikembe. I guess I got all sassy and wrote about this in our last tour blog, and he read it. Oops. Sorry Rob. You’re a cool dude and I see that now.

From Tanner Jones:

Day 6: Montclair, NJ
I’m not going to lie. After the New Year’s Evemo show, I was seriously doubting that New Jersemo could stack up. BOY WAS I WRONG. We parked a couple hours before the show, and it turned out our space was right in front of an Urban Outfitters. That place pretty much sucks but don’t tell me you don’t get just a little bit excited when you get to walk around those places. It’s the Hot Topic for people that are too cool for Hot Topic.

We kind of stumbled into an incredible pizza after that. Not literally. I mean, we stumbled into the pizza place that the pizza was at. It had baked ziti on it and we all put it in our faces. Score two for New Jersemo.

After that we did some acoustic stuff with OhNoI’mLateForSchool and moseyed on over to the gig. All the bands ruled, and by the time we played, we were surprised that people were reacting very very well. That was cool as hell. At one point I accidentally said “Hey I brought too many beers on stage. Who wants one?” You’re right, it was a totally rock and roll move, except that The Meatlocker is a dry space. Oops.

We fell asleep with Dikembe, watching Best of Home Alone 2 compilations on YouTube.

Day 7: Cambridge, MA
High of 16, low of like, 2 or something. How fucked up is that? We were slipping on ice. I’m pretty sure that, as a Floridian, I don’t even know what ice is.  But there I was, slipping on the sidewalks like a real moron. Whatever.

From Tanner Jones:

Alexandria, VA
This tour is a tour of firsts. Just some examples: this is the first time I’ve ever not seen Nick’s weiner, and it’s sure as hel. the first time anyone has ever thought “man I’m excited to see Empire Empire.” Mainly though, it’s the first time we’ve been to Northern VA/the DC area since our first tour. Last time we were here, we played a place called The Electric Maid, and some trembly ass ‘shroom mutant locked the door behind us and told us he couldn’t pay us, nor would he allow anyone else anyone in, but that we could play to him and his 14 year old intern (acoustically). We pretty much thought we’d never probably ever come back ever, but my man Phil Edfors got us to Alexandria, and I’m glad he did. We played to some crowd surfers and some song singers and I even got to pet a cat outside. DON’T TRY TO PICK IT UP THOUGH IT DOESN’T LIKE THAT.

Philadelphia, PA
New Year’s Eve. Do you think The World Is makes New Year’s Steve puns? I’d like to think they do.
